PLAINVILLE STUDENTS ACE COALITION CONTEST

Linden Street School fifth grader Samuel Lynes and Wheeler Elementary School fifth grader Tyreke Hendon have been named the winners in the Plainville Coalition for Positive Youth Development’s Community of Concern contest.

The Coalition, comprised of representatives from organizations throughout the Plainville area, focuses on positive youth development. The Coalition is also a partner in the national Community of Concern initiative, centered on substance abuse prevention. One initiative of the Coalition is the design and publication of “A Parents Guide for the Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use.” The guide was first published and distributed in 2006 to all families of students in grades 5-12 in Plainville. Each subsequent year, the guide has been distributed to fifth graders across the school district.  The Community of Concern contest was designed to enocourage families to read and review the important information about substance abuse contained in the guide. All fifth grade students and their families were invited to participate in the contest, which included a short “quiz’ about the materials contained in the booklet. Those who returned correct entries were entered into a drawing for a prize. The Wheeler Regional YMCA, a coalition member, donated two 3 month family memberships to their facility. A ceremony honoring Tyreke and Sam was held recently at Wheeler Elementary School, where Sally Miller, Associate Executive Director of the Wheeler Regional YMCA, presented the students with their “prize” memberships.

December 2, 2009 The Plainville Coalition for Positive Youth Development is sponsoring a contest for Plainville 5th graders. The Coalition developed a booklet entitled " A Parent's Guide for the Prevention of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use"  which was distributed to all 5th grade families at parent teacher conferences in October. Along with the booklets, a short worksheet was included. Families are asked to complete the worksheets using the booklets, and return the completed worksheets to their respective school offices by December 4.  A drawing will be held at each school  from the pool of correctly completed worksheets returned. The Wheeler Regional YMCA, also a Coalition member, has donated a 3 month family membership, as the prize to be awarded at each elementary school.
January 5, 2009 The Plainville Youth Activity Guide is now available on the left navigation bar of our website. The Youth Activity Guide provides a comprehensive listing of activities and resources for Plainville youth.
October 14, 2008 The Coalition co-sponsored a visit by nationally renowned motivational speaker Keith Hawkins  who met with students and faculty at Plainville High School about positive school experiences.
September 12, 2008 The Coalition cosponsored the Wheeler Regional YMCA's teen night, which included a team challenge for students. The Coalition provided information and materials for parents and students on healthy living, as well as a healthy snack demo.
